Action Alert: Healthcare Funding

Please Call and Urge Your Legislators Not to Gamble with Healthcare Funding

Greetings KRTA Members,

The Kentucky General Assembly is scheduled to return to session next Tuesday. Of course, in light of events, that is subject to change.

The budget proposed by the House only includes one-year of funding for the Medical Insurance Fund. The second year of funding is contingent upon a budget surplus. The House Budget has been sent to the Senate where there will be quite a bit of debate on not only this issue, but several other issues.

Why this is an issue?

The Kentucky Legislature is gambling with the future of our Healthcare Insurance. If Kentucky does not have a budget surplus, the TRS Medical Insurance Fund will be forced to essentially make the State’s share of health insurance payments. This will negatively impact the health insurance fund at TRS. This is the exact same practice that put our pension systems in financial straits.

I encourage you to call your senator and tell them to live up to the 2010 Shared Responsibility Agreement and properly fund the TRS Medical Insurance Fund.
