Almost 3 million Americans, including firefighters, educators, sanitation workers, health providers, road crews, and countless other critical public employees, are subject to the devastating financial effects of the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO) laws.
The GPO and WEP penalize those who have dedicated their lives to serving their communities, often in underpaid positions, by denying them the full Social Security benefits they have earned. These provisions create financial hardships for retirees and surviving spouses who rely on this income to meet their basic needs. Repealing them is not only a matter of fairness but also a commitment to respecting the contributions of our public servants.
Everyone deserves a secure retirement, especially those who devoted their career to public service.
The Social Security Fairness Act (S. 597/H.R. 82) fully repeals both the GPO and WEP.
H.R. 82 Passed the House on Tuesday evening, November 11, 2024. The vote count was 327 yes, 75 no. The act passed the House with 81% of the vote. All 6 of Kentucky’s Congressmen voted for H.R. 82; Congressmen Guthrie, Massie, Comer, Barr, Rogers, and McGarvey.
Our attention now turns to the Senate for passage. Presently, Sen. Chuck Schumer is the U.S. Senate Majority Leader and has the ability to bring the Social Security Fairness Act to a full vote.
